Timo Werner Returns to RB Leipzig After Disappointing Chelsea Spell

Bundesliga Comeback

German international Timo Werner has sealed a permanent return to RB Leipzig after a disappointing two-year spell at Chelsea. The 26-year-old forward has signed a five-year contract with his former club for a fee reported to be in the region of £25 million.

Chelsea Struggles

Werner arrived at Chelsea in 2020 with high expectations after a prolific spell at RB Leipzig. However, he struggled to replicate his form in the Premier League, scoring just 10 goals in 56 appearances. Despite promising flashes, he failed to establish himself as a regular starter under Frank Lampard or Thomas Tuchel.

Werner's Chelsea exit had been expected for some time, with the player reportedly keen on a return to Germany. RB Leipzig emerged as the frontrunners for his signature, and the deal was finally completed on Thursday.

Return to Familiar Surroundings

Werner will be hoping to rediscover his best form at RB Leipzig, where he enjoyed a highly successful period between 2016 and 2020. In 159 appearances for the Bundesliga club, he scored 95 goals and provided 40 assists.

RB Leipzig will be hoping that Werner can help them challenge for the Bundesliga title next season. They finished second behind Bayern Munich in 2022/23 and will be keen to push on and finally break Bayern's dominance.
